About Seigokan Goju-ryu Karate-do

Founded in 1945 by Master Seigo Tada, Seigokan Goju-ryu karate-do has dojos in Japan (its headquarters), the U.S., Brazil, Hong Kong, Macau, Portugal, India, and other countries around the world. Seigokan Goju-Ryu karate-do has been taught in the San Francisco Bay Area for more than 30 years.

Goju-Ryu karate-do is a martial art developed in Okinawa in the early 1900s. It was influenced by Chinese martial arts such as Shaolin White Crane, Monk Fist, and Tiger Boxing as well as native Okinawan fighting arts such as Okinawan kempo (“fist-method”).

Before the 1930s, the precursor to Goju-Ryu karate was known as Naha-Te or simply Te (Naha being the city in Okinawa where it was developed and Te meaning “hand.”) Kanryo Higaonna is the earliest known Naha-Te master.

The term Goju-Ryu (“hard/soft way”) was coined in the 1930s by Chojun Miyagi – a disciple of Higaonna’s – to describe this style of karate, which contains both hard and soft or yielding movements.

In Seigokan Goju-Ryu, you’ll learn kicks, strikes, and blocks; self-defense combinations; kata (forms); and kumite (sparring) techniques. Classes emphasize conditioning for strength, flexibility, and balance.

Instructor Marcos Collaco, 5th Dan, has taught Goju-Ryu in the Bay Area for more than 25 years.
